Hurricane Ivan
On 4 September 2004, hurricane Ivan passed by Bonaire. This was our first encounter with a hurricane (consider that Bonaire is officially
out of the hurricane belt). It passed relatively quickly, leaving all of the boards torn off of the Sabadeco Pier.

Hurricane Felix
On 2 September 2007, hurricane Felix, at category 2, passed about 70 miles north of Bonaire during the night. The next day I took a tour
around from Oil Slick Leap down to Bruce Bowker's Carib Inn to survey the damage.

Ivan Aftermath
On 10 September 2004, we dove the Sabadeco Pier for the first time since Ivan passed. Very sad. The 30 foot tall coral tower that
Eduardino lived on was completely toppled and tumbled down the reef. This is a different reef now.

Sabadeco Flood
By 10am on 17 November 2007, we measured 7 inches of rain in the previous 24 hours. The storm is letting up, but we get another few
inches before it is all over. Waterfalls on Bonaire! Scenes from around our Sabadeco neighborhood. We still (2010) are seeing the
effects of all of the silt deposited on the reef. All of Sabadeco Terrace drained into the ocean at the pier.

Other Dives
Juvenile Shark
In August of 2003, or there abouts, at least 5 juvenile Caribbean Reef Sharks were first spotted at the dive site Weber's Joy. This is
a bit of footage of one or two of them. From all of the "pressure" of dive boats visiting, over the next month or so, the five migrated
south a bit and settled in between the moorings at Bacadera and Andrea II--e.g. right at the Sabadeco pier. We saw the very shy babies
multiple times over the next 6 to 8 months until they grew up and moved away.

Octopus
On the same dive we saw the sharks (previous video), we played a bit with this octopus.

2007 Fireworks
For about two weeks prior to New Years, it becomes legal to sell fireworks on Bonaire...Any and all fireworks. And, it seems every family
puts on an amazing display. This was filmed from high in the Santa Barbara neighborhood.

2007 Masquerade
Through some magic incantation, one can get this group of Masqueraders to come to your house on New Years day. The pay is supposedly rum.
All of the costumes have a straw sized hole over the mouth. One of the few traditional displays one can see still on Bonaire.

Flamingo Flight
No one I know is quite sure why, but most evenings, an hour or so before sunset, a group of Flamingos fly from the southern
salt ponds over to Venezuela (Lake Maracaibo??). Like most things in life, it probably comes down to money or sex. Worth the effort.
We've found the best place is just past the last (Red) Slave huts before you get to the lighthouse. Bring Wine and Binoculars and
wait patiently.

Donkey Sanctuary
The famed sanctuary. I'm sure they are better off inside, but boy, they can end up in the passenger's seat if they think you have food.
